A Tennessee Titans edge rusher with a $21 million contract, boasting 21 sacks and 72 quarterback hits, has been proposed as a potential signing for the Detroit Lions.
The Detroit Lions are exceeding expectations in 2024, boasting a 6-1 record after a commanding 52-14 victory against the Tennessee Titans in Week 8. Under Dan Campbell’s leadership, the Lions lead the NFC North and are emerging as a top contender in the conference.
The offense has consistently scored over 30 points in their last four games, while the defense is improving and making key plays weekly.
Despite their strong roster, the Lions have weaknesses, particularly in pass-rushing. Season-ending injuries to Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport have created a gap in their edge rushing, prompting the Lions to seek reinforcements ahead of the Nov. 5 trade deadline.
Pro Football Network’s Dallas Robinson suggests that Titans’ edge rusher Arden Key would be a good fit for Detroit. Robinson proposes that the Lions send a 2025 seventh-round pick to acquire Key.
While Key may not completely fill the Lions’ EDGE void, his tenacity could enhance the team. The 28-year-old has recorded at least 4.5 sacks annually since 2021 and has served as a reliable rotational rusher for three different teams. Though he’s slightly undersized (240 pounds) for the Lions’ scheme, his playing style aligns with Campbell’s vision.
Key may not be an elite rusher, but he could step in as the Lions’ lead edge rusher, adding depth and experience. This season, he has achieved three sacks and 13 QB pressures, highlighted by a standout performance in Week 8 against the Lions, where he recorded two sacks and three stops.
Additionally, Key’s affordable contract and the low-cost compensation of a 2025 seventh-round draft pick make the trade practical. GM Brad Holmes should find it straightforward to negotiate a deal with Tennessee to bring this high-energy defender to Detroit.
For now, the Lions will pause trade talks as they prepare for a Week 9 matchup against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. With the NFC North being the NFL’s most competitive division, these divisional games will be vital for Campbell’s squad.
