Detroit Lions

Kelly Stafford, wife of former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, attracts notice in a Taylor Swift outfit after openly criticizing the singer’s impact.

Kelly Stafford describes herself and her husband, former Detroit Lions and current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, as “complete opposites.” Recently, she gained attention for her comments on Taylor Swift’s influence on the NFL, just before dressing as Swift for Halloween.

On the latest episode of “The Morning After” podcast, Kelly Stafford voiced her frustration with the focus on Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s girlfriend, Taylor Swift, during games. “I’ve never said I didn’t like Taylor Swift — ever,” Stafford clarified. “But I felt a bit fed up with the NFL’s coverage of her relationship with Kelce last year. It’s not something she can control, but it did wear on me.”

Even with her mixed feelings about Swift’s prominence in NFL broadcasts, Kelly Stafford remains a fan, even honoring Swift’s relationship with her Halloween costume this year.

Kelly Stafford Thinks Taylor Swift ‘Overshadows’ the Games

Kelly Stafford admitted feeling “jealous” of the attention Swift received, noting how the singer sometimes overshadowed the games. Swift was frequently featured during Chiefs broadcasts last season and their Super Bowl run.

“It was a smart business move for the NFL, but I felt it took attention away from the games,” she said. “That’s what bothered me. I felt a little envious because football seemed secondary. I may have let jealousy get to me.”

Despite this envy, Kelly Stafford still supports the singer. She and Matthew dressed as Swift and Kelce from their U.S. Open visit for Halloween, while their daughters donned Swift-inspired outfits from her Eras Tour. Kelly Stafford shared a family photo on Instagram on Nov. 1.

Kelly Stafford’s Connection to Detroit

Although Kelly and Matthew Stafford moved to Los Angeles after his 2021 trade to the Rams, they remain connected to Detroit. In a letter before the Rams played the Lions in this season’s opener, Kelly Stafford reflected on the difficulty of leaving.

“I’d love to say leaving here was easy, like I was supposed to move on, but I can’t,” she wrote. “Detroit still holds my heart, despite my attempts to move forward. It becomes clearer to me every day.”

Stafford also expressed her admiration for Detroit, highlighting its resilient spirit. “This city has shaped me in so many ways, and while my parents taught me core values, Detroit helped reinforce them,” she said. “It’s easy when surrounded by people who embody this city.”
