The Detroit Lions are reportedly in talks with the Cleveland Browns about acquiring defensive end Za’Darius Smith. According to recent reports, the two teams are close to finalizing a deal that would send the 32-year-old pass rusher to Detroit.
NFL insider Adam Schefter provided an update on the situation during an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show,” revealing that while negotiations have been progressing, the two sides have yet to agree on the trade’s compensation.
Schefter noted that discussions have been ongoing, but the terms of the deal are still being worked out.
He also mentioned the possibility of another team entering the mix if the situation changes. However, Schefter expressed confidence that the Lions and Browns would ultimately come to an agreement.
He acknowledged that trade talks can be fluid, with teams constantly checking in on players to gauge interest, especially as the NFL trade deadline looms.
In addition to the Smith situation, Maxx Crosby’s name has come up in trade rumors.
The Raiders are struggling this season with a 2-7 record, and Crosby, one of the team’s remaining leadership figures, voiced his frustration after their latest loss to the Bengals.
Although the Raiders have already moved star receiver Davante Adams and are open to offers for other players, they are not actively shopping Crosby.
Owner Mark Davis values Crosby’s leadership, making it unlikely the team would trade him unless a very compelling offer comes in.
Despite this, the Lions have shown interest in Crosby, with general manager Brad Holmes reportedly reaching out to the Raiders to inquire about the potential cost of trading for the All-Pro defensive lineman.
Although Crosby’s departure seems improbable, the Lions are clearly exploring all options to improve their roster, whether through acquiring players or gaining draft capital in future trades.
As the trade deadline approaches, teams are busy evaluating their needs and considering moves to either strengthen their squads for a playoff push or build for the future.
The Lions are among those actively working the phones, and the next few days could bring further developments in both the Smith and Crosby situations.
