Struggles to Find Consistency Have Left Schoonmaker on the Sidelines in 2024
The Dallas Cowboys’ decision to use a second-round pick on Michigan tight end Luke Schoonmaker initially raised questions, and now, after a year and a half, those concerns have only deepened. Schoonmaker, a player with potential, has struggled to find consistent playing time in 2024, leaving fans and analysts alike puzzled about his future with the team.
Lack of Development Raises Red Flags
Schoonmaker, who was expected to be a key contributor, has only recorded eight receptions for 56 yards this season. More concerning, however, is his limited involvement on the field, with just three total offensive snaps in the last two games. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer spoke candidly about Schoonmaker’s inconsistency, noting that while the tight end has potential, he needs to show up more consistently at practice.
“Consistency is key,” Schottenheimer explained. “Schoon has got talent, but it’s a little bit of the up and down. He’s got to be more consistent on a day-to-day basis, whether it’s being in the right spot, making the right calls, or communicating effectively.”
Is It Time to Worry About Schoonmaker’s Future in Dallas?
While it’s still early in his second season, Schoonmaker’s struggles have led to mounting questions about his long-term role with the Cowboys. Despite the team’s investment in him, there is concern that he hasn’t made significant strides in developing into a reliable player. If his inconsistency continues, the hope is that Schoonmaker can turn things around, but the clock is ticking for the young tight end.
For a second-round pick, such slow development raises concerns. While it’s too early to label him a bust, Schoonmaker’s inability to get on the field consistently is certainly disappointing for a team that hoped he would be a key piece in their offense. As the season progresses, Schoonmaker’s ability to improve and prove his worth will be crucial for his future in Dallas.
