Brian Branch apologizes for giving Packers fans the middle finger.

Lions defensive back Brian Branch apologized on Wednesday for flipping off the Packers crowd after being ejected during Sunday’s game.

Branch was upset about being thrown out for a hit on a defenseless receiver and reacted by making an obscene gesture toward the fans as he left the field, earning an additional unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

“That’s not something I wanted to show, and I don’t want people to view me that way,” Branch said, according to ESPN’s Eric Woodyard.

“It was just a moment of frustration, and I apologize to anyone who saw that. It won’t happen again.”

Branch’s teammates made light of the situation on Wednesday, jokingly shouting, “Throw them up, BB.”

Lions defensive assistant Jim O’Neil acknowledged the difficulty in finding a coaching moment from Branch’s hit on Packers receiver Bo Melton in the second quarter. Coaches advised Branch to adjust his targeting, which he agreed with.

“I definitely agree with the call. My target was high, but I didn’t intend to aim for the head,” Branch explained. “Going forward, I’ll make sure to lower my target.”

Branch emphasized he had no ill intent, and Melton later defended the hit, calling it “just playing ball” after the game.

“I’m all good,” Melton said. “It is what it is. He was playing ball and hit me while I was in the air.”
