Lions’ Playoff Hopes in Jeopardy as Key Starters Sidelined for Crucial Week 10 Battle with Texans
Detroit faces lineup challenges as key players sit out ahead of Sunday’s showdown.
As the Detroit Lions gear up for their Week 10 game against the Houston Texans, injuries to pivotal players have led to concerns about the team’s depth, especially on defense. With linebackers and other key players missing practices early in the week, Detroit’s roster is undergoing adjustments that could affect their performance in Sunday’s matchup.
Key Linebackers Missing in Action
In the Lions’ first practice of the week, linebackers Jalen Reeves-Maybin and Malcolm Rodriguez were both listed as non-participants. Reeves-Maybin, nursing a neck injury sustained against the Packers, managed to finish that game but is now under close observation. Rodriguez has been out since Week 8 due to an ankle injury and has yet to return to the field, putting the Lions’ defense in a difficult position.
Additionally, Detroit’s recent trade acquisition, defensive end Za’Darius Smith, did not participate. Coach Dan Campbell explained that Smith was initially scheduled to have a bye week with the Browns before being traded to Detroit. “I thought that was important…let him do what he needs to do, refresh, get back here Friday,” Campbell shared with reporters, underscoring the importance of rest as Smith integrates into the lineup.
Positive Updates Amid Setbacks
While the Lions face notable absences, there’s optimism regarding some returning players. Sione Vaki (knee), Josh Paschal (illness), Mekhi Wingo (ankle), Brodric Martin (knee), Emmanuel Moseley (pectoral), and Ifeatu Melifonwu (ankle) all participated fully in practice. Each of these players brings valuable skills to Detroit’s roster, and their returns come at a crucial time, adding stability to a team impacted by injuries.
The team has opened up the injured reserve windows for Martin, Moseley, and Melifonwu, allowing time for their evaluations. Martin has 13 days, while Moseley and Melifonwu have 20 days to prove their readiness for active play.
Texans Facing Injury Troubles, Too
The Texans are also grappling with injuries. Key defensive players like Will Anderson Jr. (ankle) and Derek Barnett (calf/shoulder) missed Wednesday’s practice. Running back Dameon Pierce (knee) and other impactful starters were either absent or limited, meaning the Texans will be similarly challenged in Sunday’s game.
Both the Lions and Texans hope to get these critical players back as they enter a pivotal phase of the season. With a potentially depleted lineup, Detroit will look to maximize the talent of their healthy players as they face a similarly strained Texans roster.
