NFL’s ‘All-Underrated’ Team Features Two Standout Detroit Lions

Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch Shine as Key Defensive Forces for the Lions

Detroit Lions safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch have quietly become two of the most impactful defensive players in the NFL. While their performances often fly under the radar, both were recently honored by SB Nation’s Dog Farrar as part of the league’s “All-Underrated” team for the 2024 season, recognizing their crucial role in the Lions’ defensive success.

A Dynamic Safety Pair

Joseph and Branch have formed a formidable safety tandem that has played a key role in transforming Detroit’s defense this season. With a combined total of 10 interceptions, 19 passes defended, and 83 tackles, the duo has demonstrated remarkable consistency and versatility in coverage. Their ability to read the game and execute defensive schemes has been essential in allowing the Lions to maintain a balanced, aggressive defense that complements their high-powered offense.

Farrar noted that while Joseph and Branch might not always receive the headlines they deserve, their playmaking ability has been central to defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn’s aggressive coverage strategies. Joseph’s expertise in deep-third coverage and Branch’s flexibility in executing a variety of roles have made them indispensable to the Lions’ defense.

Stats Don’t Lie: Dominant Defensive Play

One of the standout aspects of Detroit’s defense this year has been its exceptional performance in man coverage. Despite facing a high volume of attempts—allowing 67 completions on 136 pass attempts—the Lions have kept opposing quarterbacks at bay, giving up just 867 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions. The defense’s ability to lock down receivers has been a major factor, with an impressive passer rating of only 64.2 allowed in man coverage.

On an individual level, Joseph and Branch have posted incredible numbers in opponent passer ratings. Branch has limited opposing quarterbacks to a passer rating of just 37.5, while Joseph has allowed a similarly dominant rating of 31.6. These statistics reflect their outstanding ability to neutralize offensive threats and keep Detroit in control of games.

Recognition for Underrated Excellence

As the Lions push forward in the 2024 season, it’s clear that Joseph and Branch’s contributions are fundamental to their success. While they may not always make the front-page news, their steady and impactful performances have been crucial in elevating the Lions’ defense. These two safeties, often flying under the radar, are proving that even the most underrated players can have a significant impact on a team’s overall success, helping Detroit continue its rise as one of the league’s most wAell-rounded teams.
