Za’Darius Smith gave Brodric Martin thousands of dollars to wear the No. 99 jersey for the Detroit Lions.
When Za’Darius Smith was traded from the Browns to the Lions, securing his favorite jersey number, 99, was a priority—even though it came with a cost.
The number became available because Lions defensive tackle Brodric Martin, who was listed as No. 99, hasn’t played this season. Had Martin been active, the NFL would not have allowed a change, and Smith would have been unable to take the number.
Smith shared with reporters in Detroit on Friday that he was offered numbers in the 60s, 70s, or 80s, but he immediately rejected them. “I was like, who’s got No. 99? They told me, so we looked up his number and called him,” Smith explained about Martin. “I’m thankful to him. He’s from Alabama, Tuscaloosa, so we talked for a bit. I had to pay up, but everything worked out, and now I’ve got No. 99.”
When asked about the typical price for a jersey number change in the NFL, Smith wouldn’t provide an exact amount but hinted it was somewhere between $1,000 and $9,000.
“The going rate? It’s got three zeros at the end,” Smith said. “I’m not going to say the exact number, but he’s definitely getting paid well.”
And now Smith gets to wear the jersey number he wore in Cleveland—99.
