The Detroit Lions and their quarterback, Jared Goff, have been one of the most talked-about stories in the NFL this season.
With a record of 8-1, the Lions are currently in a strong position to secure the top spot in the NFC.
Last week, Detroit came from behind to win 26-23 against the Houston Texans, despite trailing for much of the game. This week, the Lions are set to face the Jacksonville Jaguars.
However, ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky has sparked controversy with his opinion on Goff’s MVP candidacy.
Speaking on First Take, Orlovsky stated that Goff’s MVP hopes are finished.
“No one has championed Jared Goff more, but his MVP case is over,” he said. “You don’t throw five interceptions in primetime and still be in that race.”
Goff, who has been one of the top quarterbacks this season, threw five interceptions in the win against the Texans.
Despite this setback, he has put up solid numbers overall, completing 71.8% of his passes for 2,080 yards, 16 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
He ranks 14th in passing yards, seventh in touchdowns, and has been among the leaders in interceptions.
With eight games left in the regular season, it will be interesting to see if Goff can regain his form and re-enter the MVP conversation.
While the Texans game was a tough outing for him, Goff had been performing well leading up to it.
Many NFL fans and analysts have voiced their disagreement with Orlovsky’s harsh take, calling it premature.
Goff now has the opportunity to silence his critics in the remaining games and prove that he can still be a contender for MVP.
The outcome of the upcoming games, starting with the Jaguars, could determine whether or not Goff can get back into the MVP race.
