There were plenty of rumors last offseason suggesting that Mike McCarthy might be fired after the Cowboys’ tough home playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round.
However, the organization chose to give him another year.
Still, it’s highly unlikely the 61-year-old coach will be with the Cowboys in 2025. Given Jerry Jones’ history, he’s expected to make a bold move for a new head coach.
A recent report by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler revealed that Oregon’s head coach, Dan Lanning, has been gaining attention around the NFL as a potential candidate for the 2025 head coaching cycle. Lanning, who is in just his third season at Oregon, is rapidly building a winning culture with the Ducks.
While it’s possible he’ll remain at Oregon, the Cowboys could be a major player if he decides to make the jump to the NFL.
Scott Barrett from Fantasy Points recently posted his 2025 NFL coaching predictions on X (formerly Twitter) and listed Lanning as a potential hire for the Cowboys.
If Lanning were to take the Dallas job, it would be a significant move, and the Cowboys should do everything they can to bring the 38-year-old coach on board.
Lanning has proven himself as a winner, having worked under both Nick Saban and Kirby Smart—two of the best coaches in college football history.
His experience and track record would bring a winning mindset to Dallas.
While it may be unfortunate for college football to lose such a rising star, watching Lanning take the reins in Dallas would definitely be exciting.
