Detroit Lions

Lions encouraged to sign linebacker on $11M deal as Anzalone’s replacement.

With the Detroit Lions’ defensive depth diminished due to Alex Anzalone’s wrist injury, attention has turned to possible replacements for the remainder of the season.

Anzalone, who is likely sidelined for the rest of the regular season with a broken wrist, has been a critical component of the Lions’ defense, making his absence significant.

Some analysts are suggesting the team explore free-agent options, with one notable candidate being former Miami Dolphins linebacker David Long.

Bringing in Long could help the Lions address their defensive gap.

Long, who struggled during his time with the Dolphins, was released in the final year of a two-year, $11 million contract.

Despite these struggles, he brings a range of skills that could strengthen the Lions’ defense. He started all 17 games for Miami in 2023 and six of eight in 2024 before falling out of favor.

A sixth-round pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2019, Long built a reputation as a tenacious, physical linebacker with excellent speed and a talent for pressuring quarterbacks.

While coverage isn’t his strong suit, his run-stopping ability and knack for making plays in the backfield could enhance the Lions’ defensive presence.

According to Kyle Crabbs of the Locked on Dolphins Podcast, Long’s release was due to multiple factors, including a hamstring injury and regression in run defense that led to his demotion.

However, his aggressive playing style and overall talent make him an intriguing option for Detroit.

The Lions’ defense could benefit from his physicality and energy, particularly given their need to fill Anzalone’s role. A change of scenery might help Long return to form.

Analyst Moraitis believes Long’s skill set could complement Detroit’s aggressive defense and flourish under the Lions’ winning culture.

Given the team’s strong performance this season and Dan Campbell’s leadership, Long might thrive in a system that suits his strengths.

His addition would offer immediate help to a defense that has been crucial to the Lions’ success. Despite his flaws, Long’s speed, experience, and physical presence make him a viable candidate for general manager Brad Holmes to consider as the team seeks to stay competitive in Anzalone’s absence.

The Lions are still well-positioned to compete for the NFC’s top seed, but losing a key player like Anzalone could impact their championship hopes.

Signing Long would provide an opportunity to reinforce their linebacker group and maintain their defensive edge during the postseason push.

It’s a move that could add depth and keep their title aspirations intact.

Adding David Long could be a smart, low-risk, high-reward decision for the Lions.

Given his pedigree and the team’s current needs, Long’s skill set could quickly integrate into Detroit’s system.

With the Lions aiming for a Super Bowl run, this could be the perfect moment to bolster their linebacker corps and solidify their defense for the stretch run.
