Mike Pereira, the former Vice President of NFL Officiating, did not hold back in his criticism during an interview with KNBR. According to Pereira, the officials should have penalized Seattle five yards for requesting an illegal timeout, rather than granting it.

“When it happened, I was kind of in the same mode—what did he do?” Pereira stated. “It is clear that Seattle asked for a second timeout… What you do is ignore it. Now, it didn’t get ignored, it got granted. So what is the rule? No, it is a 5-yard penalty… To me, it’s kind of one of those unforgivables.”

If the penalty had been enforced, the 49ers would have faced a much more manageable fourth-and-1 from the Seahawks’ 37-yard line. Pereira believes this field position could have influenced the 49ers’ decision to go for it, potentially sealing the game.

A Missed Opportunity with High Stakes

Instead, the 49ers were forced to punt, giving the Seahawks a chance to mount an 80-yard game-winning drive over 11 plays. The missed penalty not only cost San Francisco the opportunity to extend their drive but also might have robbed them of a critical victory in the tight NFC West race.

With the loss, the 49ers remain a game behind the division-leading Arizona Cardinals. Meanwhile, the Seahawks have strengthened their playoff position, further complicating San Francisco’s postseason path.
