The Detroit Lions are making further roster adjustments, with NFL insider Aaron Wilson reporting that defensive tackle Brodric Martin will be activated from injured reserve and placed on the 53-man roster.
This move follows the decision to place cornerback Ifeatu Melifonwu on injured reserve earlier this week, opening up a spot for Martin.
Martin, drafted in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, spent much of his rookie year developing and was only active for three games.
Heading into the 2024 season, he competed with Kyle Peko for the backup nose tackle role behind starter DJ Reader.
However, Martin suffered a knee injury in the preseason finale, leading to his placement on injured reserve before the final roster cuts.
After Peko was placed on injured reserve a few weeks into the season, the Lions turned to defensive end Pat O’Connor to fill in as the backup nose tackle.
At 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds, O’Connor is more suited for a rotational role along the defensive line rather than the nose tackle position.
With Martin returning, his 6-foot-5, 330-pound frame makes him a better fit for the role, providing the Lions with additional strength in the middle of their defensive front.
Martin’s activation marks the second return from injured reserve for the Lions in recent days.
Melifonwu was also returned to the roster on Monday, only to be placed back on injured reserve the following day.
The Lions now have six available spots on their roster, which could be filled by players like Emmanuel Moseley, who is undergoing an injury evaluation, along with Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Alex Anzalone, and possibly Melifonwu again.
Additionally, players such as Aidan Hutchinson, Derrick Barnes, and John Cominsky remain potential options for late-season or postseason returns, though their status is still uncertain due to ongoing rehabilitation.
