Kaevon Merriweather Brings Michigan Roots and Safety Depth to Detroit
The Detroit Lions continue to strengthen their roster by adding a local talent to their practice squad. Michigan native Kaevon Merriweather, a former standout at the University of Iowa, joins the Lions following the team’s announcement of several roster adjustments.
Merriweather’s Journey from Michigan to the NFL
Merriweather’s football journey began in Michigan, where he excelled at both Romulus and Belleville high schools. A dual-sport athlete in basketball and football, Merriweather chose to focus on football, leading him to Iowa. During his four-year collegiate career, he showcased his defensive prowess, recording 118 tackles, four interceptions, and a forced fumble.
Despite going undrafted in 2023, Merriweather signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and defied expectations by making their initial 53-man roster. He contributed significantly as a rookie, appearing in 16 games, starting twice, and logging impactful snaps on both defense and special teams.
Special Teams Strength and Safety Depth
This season, Merriweather has emphasized his value on special teams, participating in 200 special teams snaps alongside 44 defensive plays in nine games for the Buccaneers. With Lions safety Ifeatu Melifonwu on injured reserve, Merriweather’s versatility offers much-needed depth at safety while bolstering special teams.
Hometown Pride and Lions Fandom
Merriweather’s connection to Michigan and the Lions runs deep. Speaking at the 2023 NFL Combine, he expressed pride in representing his home state and admiration for the Lions’ recent resurgence.
“I definitely take pride in it,” Merriweather shared. “Growing up a Lions fan, it’s incredible to see the turnaround. I think they’re building something special, and I’m excited to be part of it.”
