Detroit Lions

Less than a year after stepping away from football, the ex-Lions QB hints at a potential NFL comeback.

The Detroit Lions are reportedly being urged to consider trading quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to the New York Jets.

Teddy Bridgewater’s final season in the NFL was spent with the Detroit Lions, where he added some veteran depth before stepping away from football to take a coaching role at the high school level. However, the NFL might still be calling for Bridgewater, who recently revealed he’s ready to make a comeback. The 32-year-old shared his intentions on social media, expressing his eagerness to explore available opportunities once his high school coaching season concludes.

“So many QB jobs available for me after we make this state title run. I can’t wait to return back to the NFL,” Bridgewater posted on X.

Teddy Bridgewater Ready to Return

Bridgewater didn’t see playing time with the Lions during his last NFL season in 2023, as he served as a backup behind Jared Goff while also helping rookie Hendon Hooker during his rehab from a torn ACL. Bridgewater’s most recent stint as a full-time starter was in 2021, when he started 14 games for the Denver Broncos, completing 66.9% of his passes for 3,052 yards, 18 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

Throughout his nine-year NFL career, Bridgewater played for six teams, amassing 15,120 total yards with 75 touchdowns and 47 interceptions.

Veteran Returned for One More Season in Detroit

Bridgewater announced his retirement in December 2023, revealing to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press that he had planned to retire before the season. However, Lions head coach Dan Campbell, who had worked with Bridgewater in New Orleans in 2018 and 2019 when Campbell was the assistant head coach, reached out with an offer to join the Lions.

Campbell suggested Bridgewater could serve as a mentor to two young players on the roster, Hendon Hooker and wide receiver Jameson Williams.

“He was like, ‘Man, I’m telling you, man, you’ll make a huge impact in Hendon and Jamo’s life just being here,” Bridgewater recalled.

Bridgewater said he was ultimately persuaded to return for one final season.

“I was really like content with being done,” Bridgewater admitted. “And it wasn’t really like much that went into it, it was just I felt healthy, I could walk away on my own terms and that was that. But when Dan, like we talked, and we talked, and we talked, and it was like, ‘Man, all right, Dan, I got you.’”

The mentorship aspect of Bridgewater’s return largely paid off, with both Hooker and Williams showing progress. USA Today’s Jeff Risdon suggested that the Lions could be open to bringing Bridgewater back in a mentoring role.

“The Lions are very happy with Hendon Hooker’s progress as the No. 2 quarterback behind MVP candidate Jared Goff,” Risdon wrote. “But if the team is looking for a veteran to mentor Hooker and hold a clipboard in 2025, perhaps Bridgewater would consider a return?”
