Nick Wright Faces Backlash from Lions Fans for Goff Criticism

The Detroit Lions have emerged as the betting favorites to win Super Bowl LIX at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, according to ESPN Bet, though not all analysts are sold on Detroit’s ability to claim the Lombardi Trophy.

Nick Wright, host of First Things First, believes the Lions have a major flaw that many other analysts are overlooking when comparing them to other top NFL teams.

Detroit’s quarterback is Jared Goff, who was selected first overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. Goff led the Los Angeles Rams to a Super Bowl appearance, though they fell short in the end.

Wright argues that Goff’s abilities are underwhelming and prevent Detroit from being the league’s best team.

“I don’t think you can be the best team in the league with a civilian at quarterback,” Wright remarked, prompting a response of “Come on” from co-host Kevin Wildes.

“I can’t say this team with Jared Goff at quarterback is better than the Chiefs or the Bills. I can’t, I won’t,” Wright continued, explaining that in today’s NFL, it’s “very difficult” to win three straight games with a “guy” who is just a “good guy,” which is his description of the Lions’ quarterback.

“You can be mad, that’s my opinion on the Lions,” Wright concluded, as another co-host called him “dead wrong.”

Fans quickly reacted in the comments section to Wright’s harsh take on Goff.

“That civilian threw the only perfect 18-for-18, three-touchdown game,” one commented.

“He sounds like a kid trying to sound important at the adult table,” wrote another reader.

“The Ravens won with Trent Dilfer… there’s no way you can say Dilfer is better than Goff,” a third fan pointed out.

Goff is completing 73 percent of his passes, ranking just behind Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins among quarterbacks with 1,400 or more passing attempts this season.

“Goff will feed off that disrespect!” another fan added in response to Wright’s criticism.
