Detroit Lions

A standout performance cost Jared Goff the NFC Offensive Player of the Week award.

In Week 11, Jared Goff delivered a flawless performance, posting a perfect passer rating, but it was a rare and exceptional display from another player that prevented him from winning NFC Offensive Player of the Week.

The Detroit Lions had an impressive 52-6 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, totaling 645 yards of offense and scoring touchdowns on their first seven drives.

Goff was outstanding, going 24-for-29 for 412 yards and four touchdowns, finishing with a perfect passer rating of 158.3.

His performance seemed to put him in prime position for the award, re-establishing his candidacy for MVP.

Earlier this season, Goff had earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors in Week 4, after his remarkable 18-for-18 game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Given the dominance of his Week 11 performance, it appeared likely he would receive the recognition again.

However, when the Week 11 Player of the Week awards were announced on Wednesday, it was New Orleans Saints tight end Taysom Hill who earned the NFC honor.

Hill had a standout all-around game against the Cleveland Browns, rushing for 138 yards and three touchdowns, catching eight passes for 50 yards, and completing a pass for 18 yards on two attempts, one of which was intercepted.

Hill’s versatility, which saw him take snaps as tight end, quarterback, wide receiver, running back, and even fullback, played a big role in his award. He’s also a regular on special teams, showcasing his multi-dimensional skill set.

While Hill’s performance was impressive, Goff’s Week 11 display was remarkable in its own right.

Not only did he achieve over 400 passing yards with a perfect passer rating, but he also posted the highest Expected Points Added (EPA) of any quarterback in a game this season, at +34.8.

Goff’s performance was historically significant, marking just the seventh time in NFL history that a quarterback had thrown for over 400 yards while maintaining a perfect passer rating.

This was Goff’s second time accomplishing this feat.

Hill, on the other hand, accumulated 206 total yards and three touchdowns but also had two turnovers, including an interception and a fumble.

Despite his multi-faceted contribution, it’s hard to ignore the fact that Goff’s performance was far cleaner, with 433 total yards, four touchdowns, and no turnovers.

The Lions have had a Player of the Week winner nearly every week this season, with the exception of a notable snub for defensive star Aidan Hutchinson in Week 2.

In Goff’s case, the award was denied by Hill’s exceptional all-around effort, which highlights how extraordinary Goff’s own performance was in Week 11.

Many would argue that Goff deserved the honor, despite the unique nature of Hill’s performance.

In the end, Goff’s Week 11 effort was one of the best performances of the season, and it seems like he may have been unfairly overlooked.
