Lions hopeful cornerback Emmanuel Moseley is close to returning from a string of major injuries, bringing optimism for the team’s defense.
The Detroit Lions’ offseason acquisition of cornerback Emmanuel Moseley was expected to bolster their defense, but injuries have kept the veteran sidelined. After suffering multiple major injuries in quick succession, Moseley is showing signs of a potential return, raising hopes for the Lions.
A Troubled Journey to Recovery
Moseley, who signed with the Lions while recovering from a torn ACL in 2022, faced another setback just two snaps into his season debut when he tore the ACL in his opposite knee. After re-signing with the Lions, Moseley encountered another blow, this time in the form of a torn pectoral muscle during training camp in August.
Despite these injuries, Moseley’s resilience has kept him in the team’s plans. The Lions have now opened his practice window, allowing for a possible return to the field in the near future.
Positive Signs from Practice
On Nov. 8, the Lions listed Moseley as a full participant in practice, which is a promising sign that his recovery is on track. As noted by Quarter4, this development indicates that Moseley’s return might happen sooner rather than later, with further updates expected by the end of the week.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell has also been optimistic about Moseley’s progress. “He’s doing pretty good, he’s really progressed nicely and he’s healed up well,” Campbell said. The coach emphasized that Moseley’s involvement in team activities has been growing, and although a precise timeline for his return is still unclear, the cornerback is progressing as hoped.
The Return of Key Players
While Moseley’s return is making headlines, the Lions are also optimistic about the potential return of tight end Sam LaPorta, who suffered a shoulder sprain earlier in the season. LaPorta’s status for the upcoming game against the Indianapolis Colts is still in the balance, but Coach Campbell has noted that his recovery is trending in the right direction.
“Questionable to above,” Campbell said regarding LaPorta’s condition. His return would provide a much-needed boost to the offense, following the solid performances from the tight end group in LaPorta’s absence. Notably, Brock Wright, Shane Zylstra, and James Mitchell have stepped up, with Wright even catching a touchdown pass in the Lions’ dominant win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Looking Ahead
While Moseley’s return is still uncertain, the Lions are encouraged by his recovery and the depth of their roster, especially with LaPorta potentially rejoining the team. As Moseley continues to progress, the Lions will be hopeful that his experience and playmaking ability can help solidify their secondary as they make their playoff push.
For now, the Lions remain focused on getting Moseley and other key players back on the field, ready to make a strong finish to the season. With a potential return to the defense from Moseley and LaPorta back in the fold for the offense, Detroit’s playoff prospects are looking brighter.
