Detroit Lions Sign Safety to Practice Squad, Release Another Player

The Detroit Lions have officially activated Brodric Martin to their 53-man roster, as previously reported. In addition to this move, the team made a minor adjustment to their practice squad.

On Wednesday, the Lions announced they had released safety Erick Hallett from the practice squad and replaced him with free agent Erick Hallett Kaevon Merriweather.

Merriweather, originally from Belleview, Florida, went undrafted in 2023 after playing at Iowa.

He quickly signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and earned a spot on their 53-man roster for his rookie season.

Merriweather made 16 appearances, primarily on special teams, where he earned an impressive 80.0 PFF grade.

Over the latter part of the season, he carved out a defensive role, averaging close to 20 defensive snaps per game during the final eight weeks.

This season, Merriweather remained an active player for the Buccaneers, contributing 200 special teams snaps across nine games.

However, he was waived earlier this week when Tampa Bay signed veteran safety Mike Edwards.

Merriweather went unclaimed on waivers and became a free agent on Wednesday.

Hallett, who had been with the Jaguars during training camp, joined the Lions’ practice squad just before the season began.

Despite his time with the team, he has not yet made an appearance in an NFL game.

Hallett will now be available to sign with any other team as a free agent.
