Colts’ Key Players to Watch in Sunday’s Matchup Against Detroit
Anthony Richardson and DeForest Buckner Could Pose Big Challenges for the Lions
The Detroit Lions head into their Sunday matchup against the Indianapolis Colts as 7.5-point road favorites. However, they should not expect an easy path to victory. The Colts, despite their 5-6 record, are a team that thrives on keeping games close. In fact, 10 of their 11 games this season have been decided by a single score. With talent scattered across their roster, Indianapolis has the potential to cause problems for Detroit on both sides of the ball.
Offensive Threat: Anthony Richardson
The most obvious concern for the Lions is Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson. After regaining his starting role following a benching earlier in the season, Richardson appears more confident and poised. His dual-threat ability sets him apart from most quarterbacks in the league.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged the challenge Richardson presents, saying, “He’s unique because, yeah, he can run, he’s got speed, he’s big. I mean, he’s really a tight end. He’s like a tight end that’s got speed and strength and explosiveness as a runner, but he can throw and he’ll sit in the pocket with his eyes downfield and throw.”
What makes Richardson particularly dangerous is his ability to extend plays. Even when defenders manage to close in on him, he’s tough to bring down. “You wrap him up around his shoulders, he’ll shrug you off, then he’ll take off and keep his eyes downfield,” Campbell noted. With comparisons to Josh Allen, Richardson’s rare combination of size, strength, and passing accuracy makes him a player the Lions must monitor closely.
Defensive Force: DeForest Buckner
On the defensive side of the ball, DeForest Buckner is a name that immediately stands out. The veteran defensive tackle is a consistent disruptor in the trenches, capable of wrecking offensive game plans single-handedly. Buckner’s ability to generate interior pressure can be particularly problematic for Lions quarterback Jared Goff, who thrives in a clean pocket.
In just six games this season, Buckner has recorded four tackles for loss, showcasing his knack for creating negative plays. His presence in the middle of the Colts’ defensive line is a constant headache for opposing offenses, and the Lions will need to ensure their interior offensive line holds up against him.
What’s at Stake
For the Lions, maintaining their momentum and avoiding a slip-up against a determined Colts team is critical. While Detroit may have the stronger roster overall, the presence of players like Richardson and Buckner could tilt the scales in pivotal moments.
Will the Lions’ defense find a way to contain Richardson’s unique skill set? Can their offensive line neutralize Buckner’s impact? Sunday’s game promises to answer these questions.
