Mets Retain Reid-Foley, Cut Ties with Hartwig, Young, and Ramírez

Team Fortifies Bullpen with Strategic Moves Amidst Offseason Roster Reshaping

The New York Mets continue their offseason efforts to bolster the bullpen, announcing a mix of contract decisions on Friday. While right-hander Sean Reid-Foley secured a one-year deal, the team bid farewell to right-hander Grant Hartwig, left-hander Alex Young, and outfielder Alex Ramírez.

Reid-Foley Stays, Ready for Redemption

Reid-Foley, 29, avoided arbitration with his new contract. The right-hander showcased his potential across 23 appearances in 2024, delivering a 1.66 ERA and striking out 25 batters in 21 2/3 innings. Despite these numbers, injuries remain a concern. A right shoulder impingement kept him out of action for the second half of the season, continuing a trend of limited availability—he has averaged only 13 1/3 innings annually over the past five years.

“I’ve had my setbacks, but I’m committed to contributing more next season,” Reid-Foley shared recently. The Mets are clearly banking on his upside, provided he can maintain consistent health.

Opening Roster Spots: Departures of Hartwig, Young, and Ramírez

In contrast, the Mets opted to non-tender Hartwig and Young, making them free agents. Hartwig, 26, appeared in 32 games over two seasons but underwent surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee this year. Young, 31, joined the Mets midseason from the Giants and posted a solid 3.29 ERA over 14 games. However, his history of changing teams—five organizations in four seasons—may have factored into the decision.

The Mets also parted ways with 21-year-old Alex Ramírez, once considered a top outfield prospect. Despite a breakout 2022 season at Class A, his performance declined significantly over the past two years, with OPS marks of .627 and .590.

Blackburn Stays Despite Risks

Among arbitration-eligible players, the Mets tendered contracts to key names, including pitchers Paul Blackburn, Tylor Megill, and David Peterson. Blackburn, in particular, represents a calculated risk. Following October surgery to repair a spinal fluid leak, he may not be ready for Opening Day. Still, the Mets prioritized their need for pitching depth over financial conservatism.

Shaping the Future

Friday marked the MLB deadline for tendering contracts, a critical juncture where teams decide who stays and who goes. While cost considerations drive many non-tender decisions, the Mets’ roster moves also reflect a focus on flexibility and potential impact.

As the offseason progresses, it’s clear the Mets are determined to refine their roster while preparing for a stronger 2025 campaign. Retaining Reid-Foley and tendering Blackburn signal optimism for the bullpen, while parting ways with Hartwig, Young, and Ramírez clears room for future opportunities.
