Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff gets an unexpected dose of humor as teammates David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs hijack his press conference.
The Detroit Lions are rolling through the NFL season, tied for the best record and riding high on a nine-game winning streak heading into Thanksgiving. But it’s not just about the victories on the field — this team knows how to have fun, too.
One of the best examples of their lighthearted chemistry unfolded during a Tuesday media session with quarterback Jared Goff. In the midst of answering a question about Thursday’s upcoming divisional matchup against the Chicago Bears, Goff found himself hilariously interrupted by his teammates, running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.
As Goff spoke, Montgomery suddenly appeared next to him, prompting the quarterback to exclaim, “It’s a special game to be a part of and I’m glad to be part of this tradition—What’s up? I was like, ‘Who’s up on me right now?’” Goff then turned his attention to Gibbs, who had quietly slipped up on his other side, adding to the comedic scene.
The fun didn’t stop there. A reporter asked if Goff had figured out a nickname for himself, considering that Montgomery and Gibbs were now being called “Sonic and Knuckles.” Goff turned to Montgomery for input, to which the veteran running back coolly responded, “I’m not here,” delivering the line with perfect deadpan humor.
When the reporter attempted to ask Gibbs the same question, the second-year back pretended someone from across the locker room was calling him, craning his neck as if distracted, sending Goff and the reporters into laughter.
The antics continued as the media asked Goff a more football-centric question about which running back he’d choose for a short-yardage situation. With a smirk, Goff replied, “QB sneak is usually best,” while Montgomery and Gibbs chuckled in approval.
Goff also shared his admiration for his two teammates, revealing that the duo’s impact extends far beyond their media antics. Montgomery and Gibbs have been a dominant force for the Lions, combining for 2,024 scrimmage yards and 22 touchdowns in just 11 games this season.
As the team prepares for the Thanksgiving game against the Bears, Goff, Montgomery, and Gibbs proved that even during the hustle and bustle of the season, they know how to keep things light. The Lions will face off against the Bears at 12:30 p.m. ET on Thursday, with the game promising to be a high-stakes and, no doubt, entertaining affair.
