The Detroit Lions are moving quickly to reinforce their injury-depleted defense by signing veteran linebacker Kwon Alexander from the Denver Broncos’ practice squad, according to Adam Schefter.
Alexander, a fourth-round pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015, has enjoyed a solid 10-year NFL career, which includes a Pro Bowl selection in 2017.
Throughout his career, he has started 90 games, accumulated 639 tackles (54 for loss), registered 13.5 sacks, and defended 34 passes.
Despite his success, Alexander has faced multiple injuries, including a torn Achilles in late 2020, an elbow issue that sidelined him for a month in 2021, and another Achilles tear in November 2023, this time to his other leg.
Nevertheless, he has remained productive, starting two games for the Broncos this season and earning a 92.5 PFF grade in Week 9 against the Baltimore Ravens.
Alexander’s connection to the Lions coaching staff is another asset, having played two seasons (2020-2021) with the New Orleans Saints under current Lions coaches.
At 6-foot-1 and 227 pounds, Alexander is considered slightly undersized for a linebacker but his build is similar to that of Malcolm Rodriguez, who suffered a torn ACL during the Lions’ Thanksgiving game against the Chicago Bears. Rodriguez stands at 5-foot-11, 234 pounds.
With several linebackers on injured reserve, including Alex Anzalone (broken forearm), Jalen Reeves-Maybin (neck injury), Derrick Barnes (knee), and Rodriguez, Alexander adds depth to a unit in need of help. Other linebackers stepping up include Jack Campbell, David Long, Ezekiel Turner, and Trevor Nowaske.
Alexander’s experience and familiarity with the system make him a valuable addition to the Lions’ defense as they navigate a difficult stretch of injuries.
