Following a series of injuries on Thanksgiving, the Detroit Lions are signing defensive lineman Jonah Williams off the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
During Thursday’s win over the Chicago Bears, four Lions defensive linemen – Mekhi Wingo, Josh Paschal, and Levi Onwuzirke – were injured. While Wingo (knee) was able to return, Paschal (knee) and Onwuzirke (hamstring) were sidelined for the rest of the game.
Despite strong performances from Za’Darius Smith, Al-Quadin Muhammad, and DJ Reader, who combined for 22 quarterback pressures, Detroit still needed more depth to cope with the injuries.
Williams has appeared in just seven games this season – one with the Minnesota Vikings and six with the Rams – but in 2022 and 2023, he played in 33 games, starting 22.
Known for his versatility, Williams can play both on the edge and inside, similar to roles previously held by Paschal and John Cominsky, as noted by Justin Rogers of Detroit Football Network.
Williams began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with the Rams in 2020 when current Lions general manager Brad Holmes was the Rams’ director of college scouting.
Holmes would have played a key role in evaluating Williams, according to Rogers.
With 53 players on their active roster, the Lions will need to make a corresponding move to accommodate Williams.
It is expected that linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, who suffered an ACL tear on Thursday, will be placed on injured reserve to create space.
