Detroit Lions rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs recorded his first 100-yard rushing game of his NFL career.
Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell isn’t thrilled with his star player sharing sensitive information.
Campbell addressed running back Jahmyr Gibbs after the rookie posted a video featuring teammate Jermar Jefferson, which appeared to reveal some of the team’s pass protection schemes. While it didn’t seem like Gibbs intended to disclose the details, Campbell still cautioned him about being more mindful of what he shares publicly.
Dan Campbell Responds to Social Media ‘Leak’
As noted by Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports, the video posted by Gibbs showed Jefferson in front of a whiteboard with offensive plays and pass protection codes. The post began circulating on Saturday, after the Lions’ Thanksgiving Day win over the Chicago Bears, and Campbell was asked about it by reporters. Initially unaware of the incident, Campbell issued a warning about sharing such information with outsiders.
“Oh, I didn’t know that,” Campbell said, requesting the reporter to repeat the name of the player involved. “I didn’t know that. Yeah, I need to check on that. I’d prefer not to have our stuff out there.”
Gibbs has been a key part of Detroit’s offense this season, already surpassing his rookie-year output through 12 games. He has accumulated 973 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns, adding 28 receptions for 282 yards and another touchdown through the air.
Gibbs Sits Out During Second Half of Thanksgiving Win
Gibbs had a rough start in the Lions’ Thanksgiving victory over the Bears, fumbling and dropping a pass that would have extended their 16-0 lead.
The Bears mounted a comeback in the second half, and Gibbs was mostly sidelined, with just two carries and one catch. Meanwhile, veteran David Montgomery took over the backfield duties. As MLive.com’s Kory Woods noted, Campbell explained that the second-half usage split wasn’t significant, as it reflected the offense’s struggles to maintain possession and keep drives alive.
“No, not really,” Campbell explained. “I think it was more just a rotation, and David (Montgomery) was in there. We didn’t get many plays going, had a couple of stalled drives, and it just didn’t work out quickly.”
Despite nearly squandering their lead, the Lions held on for a crucial victory that kept them in a strong playoff position. The win marked their 10th straight, giving them a two-game lead over the Philadelphia Eagles for the top seed in the NFC.
