Eric Ebron, the former first-round pick of the Detroit Lions, has officially announced his retirement from the NFL at the age of 31. Sharing the news on Instagram, Ebron expressed gratitude and pride in his journey.

Ebron’s decade in the NFL spanned multiple teams, key moments, and a Pro Bowl appearance, making him one of the more notable tight ends of his era.

Drafted Amid Controversy

In 2014, the Lions selected Ebron with the No. 10 overall pick out of the University of North Carolina. While his college career was impressive, with 973 receiving yards and three touchdowns in his junior year, the decision to draft him that high was met with skepticism.

Many fans believed Detroit should have selected defensive lineman Aaron Donald, who was picked two spots later by the Rams and became one of the NFL’s all-time greats. Ebron’s tenure in Detroit, spanning four seasons, was solid but not spectacular. He played 56 games, amassing 2,070 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns on 186 receptions.

Reinvention with the Colts

After being released by the Lions in March 2018, Ebron signed with the Indianapolis Colts. It was in Indianapolis that he had the best statistical season of his career. In 2018, he recorded 14 touchdowns and 750 receiving yards, earning a Pro Bowl selection and cementing his reputation as a red-zone threat.

During his two seasons with the Colts, Ebron totaled 1,125 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns, revitalizing his career after his early struggles in Detroit.

Final Years in Pittsburgh

Ebron spent the last two seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2020, he played a key role in the team’s 12-4 season, contributing 558 yards and five touchdowns.
