Jared Goff Nominated for Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award

Detroit Lions’ QB Recognized for Outstanding On-Field Performance and Commitment to Community

In an inspiring move that highlights his influence both on and off the field, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff has been named the team’s nominee for the prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award presented by Nationwide. This recognition, the NFL’s highest honor, is awarded to players who not only excel in their athletic performance but also make a significant impact in their communities.

A Humble Recognition

Jared Goff expressed his gratitude in response to the nomination, stating, “Once again, I am humbled to receive this nomination. My work off the field is deeply connected to my desire and responsibility to give back to my communities. To be a source of inspiration with the influence that I have is something I take seriously. Myself, my platform, and our partners remain committed to exemplifying the great values this recognition and award represents.”

Giving Back Through Education and Community Programs

Goff’s second nomination for the award in two years speaks volumes about his commitment to the Detroit community. Beyond his accomplishments on the field, where he continues to lead the Lions to success, Goff dedicates a significant portion of his time to philanthropic causes. One of his most notable initiatives is his partnership with Detroit’s Give Merit FATE program, which focuses on education and providing local youth with real-world business experiences.

Through this partnership, Goff works directly with students, involving them in designing merchandise for his JG16 brand. The proceeds from the sales fund scholarships for these students, with Goff personally matching 100% of every sale. The JG16 line also provides additional scholarships to other Detroit youth, ensuring that education remains a priority for the next generation.

Expanding Educational Opportunities

In 2022, Goff extended his influence further by teaming up with the Detroit Lions Foundation and Detroit Lions Academy to fund the creation of a STEAM lab and learning center. This project was designed to inspire literacy and foster a strong work ethic in the classroom, helping students gain access to essential tools and resources for their academic success.

Fighting Hunger on a National Scale

Goff’s impact extends beyond education. In a bid to combat national food insecurity, he partnered with the Lineage Foundation for Good, which works to alleviate food waste and hunger. For every road game touchdown he scores, Goff donates 1,000 meals to local food banks. His partnership provided 150,000 meals in 2023, and he aims to surpass that number this year.

This initiative is part of Goff’s broader effort to contribute to national food relief, a cause close to his heart. He’s also remained active in Los Angeles, where his contributions included providing one million meals to food banks and donating 20,000 masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Power of Community Support

As a nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, Goff is not just recognized for his charitable work—he is also celebrated by the NFL community and its fans. The award, along with the associated Charity Challenge, encourages fans to support their favorite nominees by voting online and using social media hashtags. The most-voted nominee will receive an additional $35,000 donation to their charity of choice, with other top nominees also receiving charitable donations.

What’s Next for Goff and the Award

The winner of the 2024 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award will be announced during the NFL Honors broadcast on February 6, 2024. This moment will bring deserved attention to all the players who are making significant impacts off the field.
