Detroit Lions Hold On to Secure Playoff Berth with 34-31 Victory Over Green Bay Packers
Jared Goff threw three touchdown passes, and Jake Bates nailed a 35-yard field goal as time expired to give the Detroit Lions a 34-31 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night, securing a playoff spot.
“This will be one of those you’ll never forget,” said Detroit head coach Dan Campbell.
The NFC-leading Lions (12-1) set a franchise record with their 11th consecutive win, including two victories over the Packers (9-4), maintaining their lead over Minnesota (10-2) in the tight NFC North race.
Campbell took bold risks on fourth down five times, including a crucial call on fourth-and-1 at the Green Bay 21 with 43 seconds remaining, and the gambles paid off all but once.
David Montgomery ran for 7 yards, narrowly taking a handoff from Goff after the quarterback tripped and nearly fell.
“I just got tripped up a little bit,” Goff admitted. “It’s a bad feeling when you’re a quarterback.”
This play allowed the Lions to attempt a field goal without giving the Packers a chance to get the ball back, and Bates made his third game-winning kick of the season.
“I just felt like we needed to finish it on offense,” Campbell said. “I didn’t want to give the ball back, and I believed we could convert. I trust the O-line. I trust David.”
Goff threw two touchdown passes on fourth-and-goal, one to Tim Patrick, who caught two TD passes. He also threw an interception in the third quarter, which helped set up one of Josh Jacobs’ three touchdown runs, matching his career high.
Goff connected with Jahymr Gibbs for a 2-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 11 seconds left in the first half, giving Detroit a 17-7 lead.
Later, Goff found Patrick for a 1-yard touchdown pass that put the Lions ahead in the fourth quarter.
Green Bay capitalized on the only time Campbell’s aggressive playcalling didn’t succeed, stopping Gibbs on a fourth-down run from Detroit’s 31-yard line late in the third quarter.
Jacobs then scored his third touchdown on a 3-yard run during the next drive.
Brandon McManus tied the game at 31-all with a 32-yard field goal with 3:38 remaining, following four lead changes earlier in the second half.
The Lions’ final drive began with a 19-yard pass from Goff to Jameson Williams, followed by a 16-yard connection with Amon-Ra St. Brown. Goff finished 32-of-41 for 283 yards, with six Lions players recording at least five receptions.
Jordan Love was 12-of-20 for 206 yards, including a touchdown pass to Tucker Kraft early in the third quarter.
