NFL Insider Explains What Would Convince Ben Johnson to Leave Detroit Lions for Bears, Jets, or Saints
NFL Power Rankings Week 15: Steelers Surge as Lions Charge Toward Playoffs
A recent report has shed light on the two main factors Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is prioritizing as he considers potential head coaching opportunities with teams such as the New York Jets and Chicago Bears.
The Lions’ rise has been a gradual one, beginning a few years ago. After finishing with a 3-13 record in 2021, the team has steadily transformed into one of the top contenders in the NFL. The 2024 season has been a standout year, with Dan Campbell’s squad entering Week 15 tied for the best record in the league at 12-1.
While many players and coaches deserve recognition for Detroit’s ascent into Super Bowl contention, one figure who stands out — besides Campbell — is offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. The 38-year-old has turned quarterback Jared Goff from a potential bust into an MVP candidate, and together they lead the league’s most potent offense.
This success has made Johnson a highly sought-after candidate for head coaching positions over the past two years. However, he is being selective about the job he accepts. Since he is with a successful team and is the highest-paid coordinator in the league, he is in no rush to make a move.
On Monday, Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer revealed what it would take to pry Johnson away from Detroit in 2025.
Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson Has Two Key Requirements for a Head Coaching Job
“His approach to this year’s hiring cycle will differ from the previous ones,” Breer wrote. “He won’t chase interviews. The ones he agrees to will come from a genuine interest in the position, not just any job. He has two key factors: organizational alignment and recognition from a team of its past mistakes, with a commitment to correct them. He wants to pitch teams on his vision and see if they are ready to fully embrace it.”
The New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, and Chicago Bears all have head coaching vacancies, with the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders possibly joining the list. Of these, the Bears are likely the most appealing option, with a solid roster and a young quarterback in Caleb Williams who has superstar potential.
