Jared Goff Influenced Dan Campbell to Take a Chance on Fourth Down vs. Green Bay

When Dan Campbell sent the Detroit Lions offense out to attempt a crucial 4th-and-1 and run down the clock instead of opting for a field goal that would give the Green Bay Packers a chance to respond last Thursday, it seemed like an easy decision for him.

Known for his aggressive coaching style and high risk tolerance, Campbell has made a name for himself as the NFL’s most daring head coach, particularly when it comes to fourth-down situations.

As it often goes for Campbell, the bold call paid off, with David Montgomery powering through the line to set up a game-winning field goal from Jake Bates, helping the Lions secure their 11th consecutive victory.

However, it almost didn’t unfold that way. Surprisingly, Campbell initially considered taking the field goal and giving the Packers a shot to rally late in the fourth quarter with Jordan Love at the helm. It was quarterback Jared Goff who convinced him to stick with his gut.

According to Goff, Campbell was about to give the signal to kick the field goal when Goff, visibly disappointed, expressed a desire to go for it. Campbell then looked at him and said, “You want to do it? Eff it, we’re going for it.”

In that moment, Campbell decided to stay true to his aggressive nature, ultimately keeping the offense on the field.

It’s been a successful formula for Campbell and the Lions so far, and the one time he considered playing it safe, Goff urged him to remain bold.

With the players fully backing their coach, it will be interesting to see if Campbell ever reconsiders taking such risks in the future.
