Despite injury setbacks, Stephen Jones applauds Mike McCarthy’s exceptional leadership of the Cowboys.
Mike McCarthy’s ability to keep the Dallas Cowboys competitive despite numerous injuries could play a role in whether he receives a contract extension.
“I think he’s done an outstanding job,” said Stephen Jones, the team’s executive vice president of personnel, on Wednesday during the NFL’s winter meetings.
“Our players are working hard and competing. That was a tough loss the other night, but they gave great effort.”
McCarthy, now in the final year of his contract, previously guided the Cowboys (5-8) to three consecutive 12-win seasons and two NFC East titles before this season took a turn.
The Cowboys fell to 3-5 after Dak Prescott’s season-ending injury. Key defensive players, including standout edge rusher Micah Parsons, also missed several games.
“When managing a team, you have to consider every factor. It would be irresponsible not to,” said Jones, referring to injuries when assessing McCarthy’s performance. “Fans and opponents might not take everything into account, but we do.”
Parsons’ return helped the team secure back-to-back wins, but Dallas lost 27-20 to Cincinnati on Monday night after a critical special teams error following a blocked punt. The Cowboys have endured four heavy defeats and four close losses by a single score.
“Credit to Mike,” said Jones. “You see teams in similar situations thinking about next season, but Mike has kept everyone focused on winning each game.”
