Detroit Preps for Bills: McNeill, Onwuzurike, and Decker Back at Practice

The Detroit Lions were back on the practice field Wednesday, taking advantage of a rare chance to regroup after an intense stretch of games.

Following their bye week in  Week 5, the Lions have played for 10 consecutive weeks. Understandably, both the players and coaching staff welcomed the brief opportunity to catch their breath ahead of their highly-anticipated matchup against the Buffalo Bills.

Wednesday’s practice offered some encouraging signs, particularly for Detroit’s defensive line. During the portion open to the media, several key players returned to action. Defensive tackle Alim McNeill, who had been in concussion protocol since leaving last Thursday’s win over the Green Bay Packers, participated fully. Initially cleared to re-enter that game, McNeill was sidelined for the second half after further evaluation.

Levi Onwuzurike, Josh Paschal, and Taylor Decker were also present during practice. Their involvement brings hope to a defense that has been stretched thin in recent weeks.

On the other hand, defensive tackle DJ Reader did not take part in individual drills. Instead, he was seen working off to the side with trainers.

Head coach Dan Campbell provided updates on the team’s injured players. Regarding Onwuzurike, he stated, “Levi’s gonna be down, but he’s gonna practice tomorrow. That’s not a negative.” He also confirmed McNeill’s return, saying, “Mac will be out there today. Paschal may run around, we’ll see what he’s got. And then Reader, if anything comes down, it’ll be tomorrow.”

The returns couldn’t come at a better time for the Lions, whose defensive line was tested last week against Green Bay. With several key players unavailable, recent signees Myles Adams and Jonah Williams were called upon to step into significant roles.

As the Lions prepare to host one of the AFC’s top teams, they aim to extend their remarkable 11-game winning streak. The 10-3 Bills, coming off a loss to the Rams, remain a formidable opponent. They boast a talented roster and are the only team to beat the Chiefs this season.

In an effort to sharpen execution, Campbell opted for a padded practice Wednesday, signaling the team’s commitment to staying sharp in what promises to be an electrifying contest.
