Lins, while infielder Gage Workman was chosen by the Chicago Cubs. For the second year in a row, the Tigers opted not to make a pick.
Hicks, 25, hails from Canada, played college baseball at Arkansas State, and was a ninth-round selection by the Texas Rangers in 2021.
In 2024, at the Double-A level, Hicks recorded a .736 OPS across 113 games, drawing 64 walks and striking out 58 times in 494 plate appearances.
He joined the Tigers’ playoff taxi squad in October as an emergency catcher, participating in celebrations and watching from the dugout but never being activated.
Workman, also 25, was drafted by the Tigers in the fourth round of the shortened 2020 draft from Arizona State, where he played alongside No. 1 pick Spencer Torkelson.
Despite spending nearly three full seasons at Erie, Workman never advanced to Triple-A with the Tigers. He recently posted an .843 OPS in 556 plate appearances, hitting 18 homers and stealing 30 bases.
A left-handed hitter, Workman primarily plays shortstop and third base but has experience across the field, offering the Cubs a potential super-utility option.
Teams pay $100,000 to draft a player from another team and must keep him on the active roster for 2024. The player cannot be demoted and must be offered back to his original team if waived.
In the minor league phase of the draft, which lacks roster restrictions, the Tigers lost four players while acquiring one.
The Tigers lost right-handers Eiker Huizi (Padres), Sadrac Franco (Giants), and Jack Anderson (Red Sox), along with catcher Josh Crouch (Angels).
They gained infielder Junior Tilien from the New York Mets.
