At 12-1 heading into Week 15, no team has been playing better football than the Lions this season.Currently sitting atop the NFC and in control of the No. 1 seed, Detroit faces another big test against Buffalo on Sunday.
But the team has risen to almost every challenge this year.
Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson credits much of the team’s success to head coach Dan Campbell’s weekly approach.
“I honestly haven’t seen any change in his leadership style,” Johnson said during his Thursday press conference. “What stands out this year compared to the past is that he hasn’t shied away from the high expectations. For someone who hasn’t been in this position before, it’s been amazing to watch. At first, I was a little nervous seeing it all unfold, but now I’m thinking, ‘This is incredible.’ He knows exactly who our guys are and what they’re made of, and they’ve really stepped up this season. They love being the team to beat, and we know we’re getting everyone’s best effort. Coach Campbell’s leadership has been a huge factor in why we’re so prepared every week.
“In the past few seasons, we’ve had a game here or there that just didn’t go our way. This year, we haven’t had that—or if we did, we managed to overcome it and still come out on top. While his approach hasn’t changed much, his ability to embrace the high expectations has been impressive. He’s leaned into it, and it’s inspiring to see him say, ‘Let’s go.’”
Johnson also noted that Campbell’s confidence has positively impacted the entire coaching staff.
“There’s no doubt his attitude has trickled down to all of us,” Johnson said. “Personally, I feel a little tense early in the week, trying to review all the tape, plan practices, and finalize plays. But by the end of the week, after he speaks in the first staff meeting, he always says, ‘We’re going to take it to these guys.’ And that confidence eases any anxiety. He always has a clear vision for how he wants the game to go across all three phases.”
Campbell’s uplifting leadership has helped the Lions excel, with Detroit ranking No. 1 in points scored and No. 2 in points allowed. Now, they’ll face a significant test against one of the AFC’s top teams, the Bills, on Sunday.
