Detroit Lions DC Aaron Glenn is already mentoring his potential successor, linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard.
As the Detroit Lions continue to dominate the NFL with a 12-1 record, much of the credit for their success is attributed to defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. The Lions’ defense has far exceeded expectations this season, even in the face of numerous injuries, and Glenn’s ability to maintain a top-tier defense has made him one of the most highly sought-after head coaching candidates in the upcoming NFL hiring cycle.
Aaron Glenn’s Confidence in Kelvin Sheppard
While Glenn’s future remains uncertain, he is already planning for the long-term future of the Lions’ defense. Recently, he highlighted one potential in-house successor: linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard.
“That’s a guy I’ve been mentoring to eventually take on the DC role,” Glenn said, as quoted by Dave Birkett. “I think he’s nearly ready, if not already, and he’s a damn good coach.”
Sheppard’s Fire and Intensity Make Him a Standout
Sheppard, who has been with the Lions since 2021, has received praise for his fiery, passionate coaching style with the linebackers. Glenn emphasized the leadership and intensity Sheppard brings, qualities essential for excelling in a high-level coaching role.
“He’s fiery, exactly what you need in a linebacker coach,” Glenn said. “Some coaches on the staff need to be bulldogs, and he’s one of those at his position, just like with D-line, O-line, and running back. You need a fricking bulldog, and he nails it.”
The Future of the Lions Defense
With Sheppard’s potential and Glenn’s mentorship, the Lions may already have a candidate ready to step in and carry on the defense’s success should Glenn move into a head coaching role soon. While the Lions remain focused on winning this season, Glenn’s proactive approach to the defense’s future shows his leadership and vision for the team’s long-term success.
