The Detroit Lions’ defense has faced a series of injuries in recent weeks, which became evident during last Thursday’s 34-31 victory over the Green Bay Packers.
Despite the win, defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn’s unit had some struggles throughout the game.
However, the Lions could soon welcome back several key defensive players as Levi Oruwariye, Josh Paschal, and others have been active in practice ahead of their Sunday matchup with the Buffalo Bills.
Their return could provide a boost to a defense that’s been battling through adversity.
During a recent interview, linebacker Jack Campbell revealed a unique nickname that head coach Dan Campbell has given to the defense.
After Thursday’s win, Coach Campbell referred to the defensive unit as the “Northern Savages,” a nickname that caught Jack Campbell’s attention.
“What stuck out with me was after the game, coach Campbell called us the ‘Northern Savages,'” Campbell shared in a video posted to X. He added, “We really are, you’ve got a bunch of guys out there flying around and having fun.”
Campbell expressed his enthusiasm for the nickname, saying, “I think that thing is sick,” and emphasized the team’s hunger to improve and love for the game.
So far this season, the Lions’ defense ranks 10th in the NFL, allowing just over 318 yards per game.
Their defense has been effective in limiting touchdowns, with only the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos allowing fewer.
However, this weekend’s game against Josh Allen and the high-powered Bills’ offense will be a true test of their defensive prowess, as the Lions face one of the toughest offenses in the league. The game is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday.
