Going Into Bills Matchup, Lions Extra Weak in One Position

Detroit faces major linebacker challenges ahead of the critical game against Buffalo.

A Tough Challenge for Detroit

The Detroit Lions, riding high on a franchise-record winning streak, face a stern test as they prepare to meet the Buffalo Bills this Sunday, December 15. While the Lions have showcased resilience throughout the season, one glaring issue may hinder their momentum—the linebacker position is severely weakened due to injuries.

Despite managing to cover other gaps left by sidelined players, this specific area could put their defense in a precarious position against Buffalo’s potent offense.

The Lions’ Linebacker Conundrum

Heading into this matchup, the Lions’ linebacker corps has taken a massive hit. Key players Alex Anzalone, Derrick Barnes, Malcolm Rodriguez, and Jalen Reeves-Maybin remain on injured reserve. To make matters worse, Trevor Nowaske has entered concussion protocol and has been ruled out for Sunday’s game.

In response, Detroit has elevated Abraham Beauplan and Jamal Adams to the active roster. Adams, a seasoned veteran, has been filling gaps since signing with the Lions two weeks ago, while Beauplan, often toggled between the practice squad and main roster, will make his third team appearance this season.

The current lineup features Kwon Alexander, Jack Campbell, David Long Jr., Ezekiel Turner, Ben Niemann, alongside the recently activated Adams and Beauplan. While this group brings determination, they lack the proven synergy and star power of the injured core.

Could the Game Be a Defensive Battle?

Although fans are bracing for a thrilling, high-scoring game, the reality might play out differently. According to Hamza Baccouche of Pride of Detroit, this could be a “low-scoring slugfest” due to the defensive strength of both teams.

The Lions rank first in pass defense and sixth in run defense by DVOA metrics, a remarkable feat given their injury woes. The Bills, meanwhile, also boast impressive rankings—11th in pass defense and 8th in run defense.

Buffalo’s Potential Hangover Effect

Baccouche predicts the Bills may struggle to replicate their recent offensive fireworks.

“After watching the Bills put up 42 points a week ago, it’s easy to think they’re going to do the same to the Lions,” Baccouche explained. “But often times it’s the opposite effect.”

Buffalo poured everything into a hard-fought but heartbreaking loss to the Los Angeles Rams last week. Recovering both physically and mentally from such an intense battle could hinder their performance against a well-rested Lions squad.

Detroit, on the other hand, comes off a close win with three extra days of preparation, which might give them an edge despite their injury struggles.

A Tight Prediction

The matchup is anticipated to be close. Buffalo Bills insiders like Chris Jenkins project a narrow victory for the Bills, predicting a 28-24 outcome. But the Lions have repeatedly defied expectations this season, and with their strong defense, they could keep the game within reach—or even pull off another surprise win.

Will Detroit’s injury-depleted linebacker unit rise to the challenge? Tune in this Sunday to see how this potential playoff preview unfolds.
