Dan Campbell, head coach of the Detroit Lions, didn’t hold back when discussing his team’s disappointing defensive performance after their 48-42 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Following a game where the Lions’ defense allowed 48 points, Campbell expressed clear frustration but emphasized that he wasn’t going to use injuries as an excuse for the unit’s struggles.
Dan Campbell on Defensive Frustrations
“Yeah, it’s frustrating,” Campbell remarked when asked about the defensive showing. “I thought we’d perform better. Some of these plays where they make a good one, I can accept that. But overall, when you know there are self-inflicted mistakes—things we caused ourselves—that gave them better chances, that’s what’s frustrating. You just want to make sure you didn’t hand it to them, and I do think we gave them a bit of help.”
Campbell’s comments highlighted his belief that the Lions’ defense didn’t just struggle against the Bills’ potent offense, but also made avoidable mistakes that put them in tough spots. Whether it was missed tackles, blown coverages, or giving up crucial plays at bad times, the Lions’ defense couldn’t keep pace with the Bills, despite Jared Goff and the offense putting up a solid effort.
Refusal to Use Injuries as an Excuse
When asked if injuries played a role in the defensive woes, Campbell was firm in his stance.
“No, I’m not buying it. I’m not. We can do better. We should’ve done better. We know how good they are, but their team was simply more urgent than ours today,” Campbell stated.
His response reinforced the idea that, while injuries have impacted the Lions’ season, the real issue was execution and effort. Campbell made it clear that, despite these challenges, the team is capable of better performance and must approach future games with greater urgency.
Looking Ahead
Despite the frustrating defeat and defensive struggles, the Lions remain in strong position with a 12-2 record and are still in control of their playoff destiny with three regular-season games remaining. The defense will need to address its issues quickly, particularly with the playoff race intensifying.
Campbell’s refusal to make excuses highlights the level of accountability and determination he expects from his team. As the Lions prepare for their next matchup, focusing on improved defensive execution will be key to making a deep playoff run.
