From USFL to the NFL: Stantley Thomas-Oliver III Joins Detroit Lions

Former USFL standout strengthens Lions’ secondary as injuries test their depth.

A New Opportunity for Stantley Thomas-Oliver III

The Detroit Lions have signed cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver III to bolster their injury-depleted secondary. After a journey marked by resilience and determination, Thomas-Oliver is stepping back onto the NFL stage, ready to contribute to a Lions team that is eyeing a strong postseason run.

Originally selected by the Carolina Panthers in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Thomas-Oliver spent three seasons with the franchise, primarily contributing on special teams and as a backup corner. While his role in Carolina was limited, he consistently showed flashes of potential, particularly with his athleticism and versatility.

A Journey Through Challenges and Comebacks

After his time with the Panthers, Thomas-Oliver’s career took a detour. On October 30, 2023, he joined the New York Giants’ practice squad and later signed a reserve/future contract on January 8, 2024. Unfortunately, injuries struck again, leading to his release by the Giants on July 31 with a non-football injury designation.

Refusing to give up, Thomas-Oliver pivoted to the USFL, where he signed with the Birmingham Stallions on November 18, 2024. His performances in the USFL reignited interest in his abilities, showcasing his readiness for another shot in the NFL.

Why the Lions Made the Move

With cornerbacks Carlton Davis and Khalil Dorsey both placed on injured reserve, the Lions needed reinforcements for their secondary. Bringing in Thomas-Oliver is a calculated move to strengthen their depth as they gear up for a postseason push.

Thomas-Oliver’s versatility and special teams experience make him a valuable addition to the Lions’ roster. As Detroit faces some of the league’s toughest offenses in the weeks ahead, having a player with his adaptability and determination could prove pivotal.

A Key Role in the Lions’ Postseason Aspirations

As the Lions continue their impressive 2024 campaign, the addition of Thomas-Oliver underscores their commitment to overcoming adversity. With just weeks remaining in the regular season, every player on the roster will be vital in shaping Detroit’s postseason destiny.

For Thomas-Oliver, this is more than a roster move—it’s a chance to solidify his place in the NFL and contribute to a team with championship ambitions.
