Defensive lineman Chris Smith continues to move between the Detroit Lions’ practice squad, free agency, and main roster.
Smith was waived on Monday afternoon after playing 12 defensive snaps in the team’s 34-17 victory over the Chicago Bears.
The 25-year-old defensive lineman was released during roster cuts after training camp but played in the Week 1 game with DJ Reader still recovering. He has been waived, re-signed, and waived again multiple times since.
Smith has played in three games this season, recording 30 defensive snaps and three on special teams.
Smith stepped up to fill the gap left by Alim McNeill in the Bears game, which was the Lions’ first since McNeill’s season-ending ACL injury. Smith is a strong candidate to return to the practice squad as the Lions continue to adjust their roster to accommodate returning players.
The Michigan native got the call over Brodric Martin and Jonah Williams in Chicago. Smith was promoted to the 53-man roster from the practice squad on Saturday. Martin and Williams were inactive, and the Lions used Smith as a rotational player alongside Myles Adams, Pat O’Connor, and Al-Quadin Muhammad.
