Lions’ Christmas Eve roster adjustment suggests improved health for the linebacker unit.
The Detroit Lions made a roster move on Christmas Eve that indicates improving health in their injury-stricken linebacker unit.
On Tuesday, the Lions announced two changes: they waived linebacker David Long and re-signed wide receiver Maurice Alexander to the practice squad.
Alexander has been involved in frequent roster transactions, while Long had been signed to the practice squad just over a month ago following Alex Anzalone’s forearm injury in Week 11 against Jacksonville.
During his time with the Lions, Long played in all five games, logging 70 defensive snaps and 58 on special teams, recording seven tackles and a fumble recovery in a rotation at the WILL linebacker position.
Last week, the Lions brought back Anthony Pittman from the Jaguars’ practice squad. In the Week 16 game against Chicago, Pittman played 11 defensive snaps compared to none for Long, signaling the possibility of Long’s release.
If Long clears waivers, he might return to the practice squad, but waiving him suggests growing confidence in the health of their linebacker group.
Jalen Reeves-Maybin returned to practice last Thursday, starting his 21-day activation window from injured reserve after dealing with a neck injury.
Head coach Dan Campbell had previously expressed uncertainty about Reeves-Maybin’s return, but his practice participation indicates progress.
On Monday, Campbell identified Reeves-Maybin as a potential candidate to be activated this week, stating the team would monitor his condition closely.
Alex Anzalone, who was originally expected to recover in 6-8 weeks, is nearing a return.
Campbell confirmed on Monday that Anzalone is close but remained uncertain if he would be ready this week. Anzalone can be activated from injured reserve as soon as he is deemed ready.
The Lions’ linebacking corps has been severely impacted by injuries, with Anzalone, Reeves-Maybin, Derrick Barnes, and Malcolm Rodriguez all missing time.
Despite this, the team appears confident in its depth, with signs of optimism as Anzalone and Reeves-Maybin approach their returns.
The roster adjustments and upcoming recoveries of key players indicate the Lions’ defense is on the mend, positioning them for the playoffs with a more robust lineup.
The improved health of their linebackers is a promising development for a team that has battled adversity throughout the season.
