The Detroit Lions are gearing up for their game against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday, December 29, with a new addition to their quarterback roster: veteran Teddy Bridgewater.
However, Lions head coach Dan Campbell has addressed some questions about the team’s quarterback depth in light of this move.
The signing of Bridgewater might have initially suggested that Campbell lacked confidence in backup quarterback Hendon Hooker to step in for Jared Goff, the franchise quarterback.
But Campbell has clarified his stance on the situation, emphasizing that the decision to bring Bridgewater in doesn’t reflect negatively on Hooker’s abilities.
In a press conference on Thursday, December 26, Campbell discussed the reasoning behind the Bridgewater signing.
He explained that bringing in a seasoned veteran with significant NFL experience is a strategic move as the Lions approach the playoffs.
Despite Bridgewater’s arrival, Campbell reassured the media that this does not indicate disappointment with Hooker.
“It doesn’t mean we’re disappointed in Hooker,” Campbell clarified.
“It just means this gives us somebody who’s played a lot in the NFL. We’re preparing for the playoffs, and it’s good to have him back with us.”
The Lions, currently Super Bowl contenders, are making sure their roster is in top shape for the postseason, and Campbell acknowledged that every player added to the team is an asset. Regarding Hooker’s development, Campbell expressed confidence in the young quarterback’s progress.
“Hooker’s improving every week,” Campbell said. “He could very well see playing time, but this doesn’t mean he’s out of the picture.
If it comes to that, Hooker is going to play for us, but Teddy probably will, too. This is just a different situation, and we felt it was the right decision to bring someone in who we trust.”
Campbell also stressed his deep trust in Bridgewater, noting that the veteran quarterback understands the Lions’ offensive system and has a strong relationship with both the players and coaches.
This familiarity adds a layer of comfort to the team as they prepare for the high stakes of the postseason.
“We’ve been in contact with Teddy for a while, so this wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision,” Campbell shared. “Bringing him on has always been a possibility.
He’s been doing great things for his community, and they recently won a championship down there. His transition into coaching has been successful.”
Bridgewater has kept himself in peak physical condition since his brief retirement.
Campbell mentioned that the quarterback has been maintaining his fitness, throwing the ball, and staying ready for an opportunity like this.
The Lions’ head coach believes Bridgewater brings professionalism and a strong veteran presence to the team.
“He’s great for our team and for the quarterback position,” Campbell added.
“He’s a veteran presence who will add value as we move forward, especially in the high-pressure environment of the playoffs.”
This move underscores the Lions’ need for a reliable backup quarterback, especially considering the high stakes of postseason play.
While Hooker may not have had much playing time this season, Campbell acknowledged that calling on him in such an important moment could be daunting for a relatively inexperienced player.
With Bridgewater on the roster, the Lions gain added security, ensuring that they’re well-prepared for whatever challenges lie ahead in the playoffs.
