As the Detroit Lions push toward the postseason, head coach Dan Campbell faces one of the NFL’s toughest challenges: making roster decisions.

Recently, Campbell opened up about the difficulty of releasing players, such as linebacker Kwon Alexander, after bringing them in to address team needs during a challenging stretch.

“It’s tough,” Campbell admitted, reflecting on the realities of NFL roster management.

“That’s the hard truth of this league, and it’s tough because, as you said, you rely on these guys to step in and contribute.

Then players get healthy, and you’re forced to make a move.”

Alexander was signed to bolster the linebacker position when depth was an issue, and Campbell acknowledged the delicate balance between managing the roster and respecting the players who contribute so much to the team.

Campbell spoke highly of Alexander, a seasoned veteran known for his dedication and professionalism.

“Of course, we’d love to keep him on the roster,” Campbell said. “We know what he brings to the table.

He’s no different to me than Teddy Bridgewater on offense—he’s a guy who lives and breathes football.

He’s smart, works hard, and never complains.”

Although letting Alexander go was a tough call, Campbell made it clear he’s open to bringing him back, possibly as part of the veteran squad.

“I still believe we’ll need him again before this is all over,” Campbell stated.

Campbell also highlighted the importance of trust in roster decisions, using players like wide receiver Tom Kennedy as examples of those who have earned their spot.

“These players have earned our trust and deserve to be here,” Campbell explained.

“It’s not charity—it’s because we know they’ll come through when needed.”

The Lions’ coaching staff and roster, Campbell emphasized, are built on merit.

Players earn their roles through consistent effort and performance. “The ones we bring back, the ones who stick, they’ve earned it,” Campbell said.

As the postseason approaches, Campbell’s commitment to respect, trust, and meritocracy will remain central to his decision-making process.
