Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was penalized for taunting Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson during Sunday’s game, marking the second such incident this season.

His first taunting penalty occurred in the Lions’ 23-20 win over the Bears on Nov. 28, and the second came in their 34-17 victory this Sunday.

Lions coach Dan Campbell addressed the situation after the game, praising Williams for his response. “He was great,” Campbell said, recounting their sideline conversation.

“I told him, ‘You can’t give them a free ride,’ and he understood immediately. He just said, ‘I got it,’ and moved on. It didn’t affect his performance for the rest of the game. I love where he’s at right now.”

Despite Campbell’s positive outlook, the NFL took a stricter stance, fining Williams $11,255 for the penalty, as announced on Saturday. However, the league had not fined him for the earlier taunting penalty in November.

Williams wasn’t the only Alabama alum fined during Week 16. Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey also received an $11,255 fine for taunting.

Although Humphrey was not penalized during the game, the NFL imposed the fine after he taunted pursuers while returning an interception for a touchdown in the Ravens’ 34-17 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Two other Alabama-connected players were among the 22 fined by the NFL in Week 16. Pittsburgh Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was fined $11,255 for a face-mask penalty, while Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Colby Wooden incurred a $6,150 fine for unnecessary roughness.

The NFL determines fines based on a collectively bargained schedule, which outlines monetary penalties for various infractions. The league also considers aggravating and mitigating factors that could influence the final amount.

Campbell’s support of Williams contrasts with the NFL’s rigid disciplinary approach, highlighting differing perspectives on player behavior.

While Campbell commended Williams for his resilience and focus, the league maintained its strict enforcement of rules through financial penalties, underscoring its commitment to upholding sportsmanship on the field.

For Williams, the mix of fines and support reflects both the challenges of adhering to NFL standards and the encouragement he receives from his coach, who values his ability to learn and grow from these experiences.
