Dan Campbell Reflects on Challenging Roster Decisions and Player Respect

As the Detroit Lions strive for a postseason berth, head coach Dan Campbell is faced with some of the most difficult decisions in football: roster changes.

Recently, Campbell discussed the challenge of letting go of players, particularly linebacker Kwon Alexander, whom they had signed to help during a challenging stretch.

“Yeah, it’s hard,” Campbell admitted, reflecting on the tough decisions involved in roster management.

“That’s the hard, cold, truth of this League, and that’s the tough part because, as you said, you rely on these guys to come in and help, and then, when some players get healthy, you have to make tough choices.”

The Lions brought in Alexander when they needed additional depth at linebacker, and Campbell emphasized the challenge of balancing roster adjustments with respect for players who have contributed to the team.

Campbell expressed deep respect for Alexander, a veteran known for his dedication and work ethic.

“We knew we would love to have him on the roster,” Campbell explained. “We know what he brings… he’s no different to me than Teddy Bridgewater offensively.

He’s a guy who loves the game, lives it, breathes it, and is incredibly smart. He doesn’t complain, he just works hard.”

Even though the team had to part ways with Alexander, Campbell left the door open for a potential return, possibly in a veteran role.

“I still think we’ll need him before this is all over,” Campbell said. “We’ll need him again.”

Campbell also highlighted the importance of trust in his decisions, pointing to players like wide receiver Tom Kennedy as examples of individuals who have earned their spot.

“Those players have earned our trust and deserve to be here in some capacity,” Campbell noted.

“It’s not about charity, it’s about trust. We know we’ll need them.”

The Lions’ roster decisions are grounded in merit, where players earn their place through consistent effort and performance.

“The players we bring back and who have been here a long time, they’ve earned it,” Campbell remarked.

As the Lions move forward into the postseason, Campbell’s emphasis on respect, trust, and the merit-based system will continue to guide the difficult choices he faces.
