Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was fined for taunting Chicago Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson during Detroit’s 34-17 victory at Soldier Field last Sunday.
The incident occurred in the first quarter when Stevenson shoved Williams on the Bears’ sideline.
In response, Williams spun the ball in Stevenson’s direction, which struck his foot. This act drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. On Saturday, Williams was fined $11,255 by the league for the incident.
After the flag, Williams was seen talking with Lions coach Dan Campbell on the sideline.
Neither appeared upset by the situation. Williams later commented on the play, noting that spinning the ball is a common gesture in football.
“People spin the ball after big catches. It happens multiple times during games,” he said. Williams also clarified there was no exchange of words with Stevenson.
Coach Campbell praised Williams’ performance in the game, calling it his best as a professional. Williams recorded five receptions for a career-high 143 yards, including an 82-yard touchdown.
This isn’t the first time Williams and Stevenson have been involved in a fined incident.
During Detroit’s Thanksgiving Day win over Chicago, Williams was penalized for tossing the ball in Stevenson’s face after a catch near the Bears’ sideline.
Video suggested Williams’ actions were a response to Stevenson deliberately tripping him during the play.
While Stevenson wasn’t on the field, the NFL sided with this view and fined him $19,697 for his role in that incident.
Both episodes highlight the competitive tension between the two players during the Lions-Bears rivalry.
