Jared Goff threw three touchdown passes as the Detroit Lions prepared for their Week 18 showdown against Minnesota with a 40-34 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night.
Goff connected with Amon-Ra St. Brown for a go-ahead touchdown late in the third quarter following Kerby Joseph’s first of two second-half interceptions against Brock Purdy in a rematch of last season’s NFC Championship Game, which San Francisco won.
The victory pushed the Lions (14-2) to a franchise-record 14 wins and marked their first road win against the 49ers (6-10) since 1975.
The stakes were far smaller than their previous meeting, as San Francisco was eliminated from playoff contention last week.
Detroit now faces Minnesota next week, with the winner securing the NFC North title and the top seed in the playoffs, while the loser takes a wild card spot.
This win will only impact playoff seeding if Detroit and Minnesota tie in Week 18, as the Lions are now positioned to claim the No. 1 seed in that scenario.
Jahmyr Gibbs sealed the victory with a 30-yard touchdown run late in the game after Purdy’s second interception. Gibbs finished with 117 yards on the night.
The offenses dominated much of the game, with touchdowns on the first five possessions.
Goff and Purdy combined to complete their first 17 passes, highlighted by a hook-and-ladder play resulting in a 42-yard Lions touchdown.
St. Brown caught a short pass and pitched it to Jameson Williams, who sprinted down the sideline for his second score of the half.
Defenses only managed two stops before halftime: Renardo Green broke up a pass to Sam LaPorta in the end zone, and Jake Moody missed a 51-yard field goal for San Francisco just before the break.
Purdy threw a 5-yard pop pass for a touchdown on San Francisco’s opening second-half drive, but Joseph’s interception on the next drive set up Goff’s 4-yard touchdown pass to St. Brown on fourth-and-goal, giving Detroit a 31-28 lead.
Moody later missed a 58-yard field goal attempt, his ninth miss of the season, and also failed to convert an extra point after Joshua Dobbs’ late touchdown run.
