Since several key players from the 2022 draft class are eligible for extensions this offseason, the Lions face decisions regarding their futures.
Last year, Detroit extended Penei Sewell despite him having a fifth-year option, and they could take a similar approach with Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams.
Both players, despite Hutchinson’s injury, are poised to command significant contract values following a strong season from Williams. At the very least, the team is expected to exercise their fifth-year options, keeping them around for another season.
Additionally, safety Kerby Joseph, a third-round pick, is likely to attract attention after leading the league with nine interceptions. With 17 career interceptions in three seasons, Joseph has cemented himself as a leader in the secondary, making him deserving of an extension.
Detroit should prioritize keeping him around for the future with a new deal this offseason. Hutchinson, Williams, and Joseph should all be focal points for the Lions’ future plans.
While the team has some time with Hutchinson and Williams due to their fifth-year options, their approach with Sewell signals that extensions could be on the horizon for all three.
The Lions must also prepare for the potential departure of their offensive and defensive coordinators, who will be highly sought after as head coaching candidates this offseason.
Both Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn have been interviewed for head coaching roles in previous years and will likely be top targets again.
With this in mind, the Lions need a clear strategy for replacing them if necessary. While Detroit may already have internal candidates lined up, it’s crucial that they make the right decision to avoid losing the momentum they’ve gained in the past two seasons.
If Johnson leaves, assistant head coach Scottie Montgomery or passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand could be strong candidates. On defense, Glenn has worked with linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard, mentoring him for a potential coordinator role. The Lions must ensure the right hires are made to keep their successful trajectory intact.
As the Lions position themselves to compete for a second-straight division title and a Super Bowl berth in 2024, maintaining success will be key.
Coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes have cultivated a winning culture, and the upcoming year will focus on preserving that momentum. While their impressive 11-game winning streak this season may be difficult to replicate due to league parity, Detroit remains a top contender.
The challenge will be to avoid complacency, something the Lions seem to be managing well after last season’s success. Campbell and Holmes will need to navigate the unpredictable nature of the NFL, ensuring the team remains competitive and continues its high-level performance moving forward.
