McCarthy gives a brutally honest assessment of the disappointing Cowboys’ performance.
The Dallas Cowboys were defeated 41-7 by the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field, but Mike McCarthy’s team contributed to their own defeat.
The Cowboys offense had four turnovers against the Eagles, including two Cooper Rush interceptions (one for a pick-six) and two fumbles, one by Jake Ferguson and another by Rico Dowdle (in the red zone), giving the Eagles four extra possessions.
In total, 24 points came from Dallas turnovers, as Philadelphia capitalized repeatedly, leaving Mike McCarthy visibly frustrated.
“The giveaways are disheartening, frankly,” McCarthy said, reflecting on the harsh statistics. “They were giveaways, careless giveaways. That’s the tough part offensively because we had a game plan: run the football, stay in favorable down and distance, and convert on third down, where we were at 43 percent. It really came down to ball security.
If you’d told me we’d run over 30 times in a game, I’d have said we’d win. We didn’t capitalize on that opportunity.”
The Cowboys entered the Eagles game knowing turnovers had to be avoided, and Rush’s pick-six on the opening drive set the tone. While it remained close for a quarter and a half, the three turnovers in the first half prevented Dallas from staying competitive, leaving them with a 24-7 halftime deficit.
Attention now shifts to the Washington Commanders in Week 18, and while it’s uncertain who will play, one thing is clear: four turnovers cannot be repeated.
