Despite low stakes, the Lions thrived with Joseph’s interceptions and Montgomery’s coaching earning recognition.
In the Detroit Lions’ road revenge match against the San Francisco 49ers, a victory that had minimal playoff implications, the team exploded offensively, scoring 40 points and overcoming a heartbreaking loss from the previous season. After leading 24-7 at halftime, the Lions surged with a 23-7 run in the second half, making key plays on defense to secure the win. With the desire for closure on last season’s NFC Championship loss, several players stood out for game ball and unsung hero honors.
Game Ball: Kerby Joseph
After handing out game balls to Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Jameson Williams after the Lions’ win over the Bears, all three were deserving of recognition again. The entire offense, setting an NFL record with six straight games of 40 points and no turnovers, also earned praise. But for this game, the game ball goes to a defensive player. Despite the Lions’ defense allowing 34 points, including 21 in the first half, Kerby Joseph made the difference.
Joseph stepped up after a personal foul on the opening drive and made crucial plays when needed most. The 49ers scored on their first three drives and added another touchdown on their fifth. But on the 49ers’ sixth drive, Brock Purdy’s pass was intercepted by Joseph, ending a promising drive and leading to a Lions touchdown by Amon-Ra St. Brown. Later, with the 49ers threatening again, Joseph intercepted another Purdy pass, halting their drive and keeping the Lions ahead. These pivotal interceptions helped the Lions eat up clock and score another touchdown to secure the win.
In total, Joseph had six tackles, one defensive stop, zero receptions allowed, and two interceptions. His interceptions brought his season total to nine, the most in the NFL and the most by a Lions player since 1981. Joseph has the most interceptions (17) and most multi-interception games (three) of any NFL player since entering the league in 2022. With several key players lost to injury, Joseph’s timely plays are a reminder of the impact needed for the Lions to achieve their goal of winning a Super Bowl.
Unsung Hero: Scottie Montgomery
Assistant head coach and running backs coach Scottie Montgomery has played a pivotal role despite losing star running back David Montgomery after Week 15. Under Montgomery’s guidance, the Lions’ backfield has remained productive. This week’s unsung hero, Montgomery helped elevate his running back group to new heights in the absence of key players.
Jahmyr Gibbs, in particular, had an outstanding performance, recording 163 yards from scrimmage for his second-highest total of the season. With 18 carries for 117 rushing yards and a touchdown, as well as 46 receiving yards on four catches, Gibbs demonstrated his versatility. He also showcased improved pass protection, especially on blitz pick-ups against the 49ers. Meanwhile, Craig Reynolds had his best game of the season, racking up 66 yards on nine touches. Reynolds was a valuable contributor, with 31 rushing yards on seven carries, 35 receiving yards on two catches, and even a special teams tackle.
Though Jermar Jefferson only contributed 9 rushing yards, his 8-yard run set up the Lions’ first touchdown. Scottie Montgomery’s coaching has ensured the running backs have stepped up in more significant roles, maintaining the Lions’ offensive momentum against the 49ers.
